Lori: Although I saw flamingoes several more times, we unfortunately never did get at all close to them. Sarah's folks saw many up-close on the earlier part of their trip, and even saved a feather for us. The flayed beast is definitely on the "this way to meat-o-rama" side of things :) Crested Ducks were our companions in most of Chile - nice common birds to have around, eh? I saw one more presumably Magellanic Oystercatcher (there are 3 Oystercatcher species in the region, all pretty similar), but that was it - I was happy to get the photo I did! I'm so glad you & your girls have been enjoying the trip - there's still quite a bit more to come!

ScienceGuy: A climber, are you? Unfortunately, for several reasons (lack of gas and too-long hikes mostly), we didn't really get up close and personal with the Torres themselves, although we spent plenty of time admiring the Cuernos del Paine ("Horns of Paine"). Certainly the Torres are classic super-hard climbs (5.12 VII I think some of them are? I'm not a climber, tho).

The Torres del Paine, they contain so many wonderful mountains (all of which I would love to climb). I cannot wait to find out what will happen. The flamengos certainly do seem out of place in that place.

Really - I am enjoying so much this little photo-journey your taking us on! Like you I would have been so excited at seeing the Chilean Flamingo's! Wow that is amazingly cool. (Now just seeing your basic pink flamingo would be exciting but I'm guessing a trip to Florida would be in order for that.) Meanwhile, what is up with that little bit of art piece there? Is a man with a gutted beast over an open flame; is the meaning behind that? "food this way; meat this way? or just Chilean art?" Anyway I love it! It both makes me laugh and wonder all at the same time. I think that shot you took of the Torres del Paine is just breathtaking! At the end of the day I love your bird shots the most; like that gorgeous pinkish-red bar on the crested duck. And the long beak on your oystercatcher.. really beautiful birds. All would have been lifers for me! Fabulous and once again amazing work! I'm so happy you've went so in depth. Honestly speaking over the last three days my girls and I have been reading through it together and they are enjoying the "photo-trip" as much as I.

Klaus: Thanks!

Sandpiper: I figured you'd like the swan :)

Terry: Thank you - it was very cool seeing so many new birds, of course. I haven't finalized the IDs of everything yet, but I think it was around 75.

Birdlady: Welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed the post!

What a great trip! The black-necked swan really caught my eye, and the scenery is stunning! Wonderful pictures and writing in your journal.
